తెలుగు సాహిత్యానుశీలనకు విమర్శ సిద్ధాంతాలుగా ఇంతవరకు సంస్కృతాలంకారికుల సిద్ధాంతాలే ఆధారమయ్యాయి. కావ్యాన్ని, కవిత్వ తత్వాన్ని, కావ్య హేతువులను, కావ్య ప్రయోజనాలను సంస్కృతాలంకారికుల దృష్టితోనే పరిశిలించే దశ ఇప్పుడు కూడా ఉంది. దీనికి కారణం తెలుగులో సమగ్రమైన కావ్య తత్వ శాస్త్రాలు లేకపోవడమే. ప్రసిద్దులైన తెలుగు సాహిత్య విమర్శకులు కూడా సంస్కృత లక్షణ గ్రంథాలమీదే ఆధారపడి విమర్శ సిద్దాంతాలను వెలయించారు. దీనికి కారణం దాదాపుగా ఆధునిక యుగం వచ్చే వరకు తెలుగు సాహిత్యం సంస్కృత సాహిత్యం మీదనే ఆధారపడి ఉండడమే. ప్రతి కావ్యము మార్గ రీతిలో రచింపబడడమే. సంస్కృత భాషా సాహిత్యాలు తెలుగు భాషా సాహిత్యాలపైన గాఢమైన ప్రభావాన్ని చూపడమే.
